Walk into a North American sauna showroom and cedar is presented as the sauna wood. Walk into a sauna in Finland and you will almost never find it. Finnish saunas are built overwhelmingly from spruce, aspen, and alder — plain Nordic softwoods, knots included — and that is a tradition, not a compromise. Cedar is a fine sauna wood. It is simply the North American tradition, not the Finnish one. What follows compares the species American suppliers actually sell — cedar, hemlock, aspen, alder, spruce, and their thermally modified versions — by the properties that matter at 90 °C: resin, density, stability, splinter behavior, and scent. Bench wood and wall wood are different problems, and this guide keeps them apart.
What wood do Finns actually use?
Spruce for the walls and ceiling, aspen or alder for the benches. That is the ordinary Finnish sauna — in apartment buildings, in public swimming halls, at the lakeside cottage — and it has been for generations. The sauna culture Finland inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2020 grew up in local softwood: smoke saunas of pine and spruce logs, modern rooms in knotty spruce paneling. Western red cedar barely appears in Finland at all. Trumpkin’s Notes, the most-cited English-language reference on Finnish-style sauna building, makes the point plainly, and Finnish design writers such as Lassi Liikkanen of Saunologia treat spruce as the unremarkable default rather than a budget grade.
Knots are part of the look. The clear, knot-free board that Americans read as quality is a North American grading preference, not a Finnish one. And birch — the tree outsiders expect everywhere in Finland — enters the sauna as a vasta or vihta, the leafy birch whisk, never as paneling. Both names are correct; Kotus, the Institute for the Languages of Finland, maps the split along old dialect lines. What makes a wood good for a sauna?
Four properties decide it, and scent makes a fifth.
- Low resin. At bench height the air runs 80–100 °C, and every ladle of löyly (the burst of steam off the hot stones) drives heat and moisture into the boards. Pitch in resinous wood liquefies at those temperatures. On a wall it weeps and stains; on a bench it sticks to skin.
- Low density. Heat moves through wood roughly in proportion to its density — the USDA Wood Handbook documents the relationship. Aspen, at about 420 kg/m³, passes heat to your skin slowly enough to sit on at full temperature; oak, at roughly 700 kg/m³, does not. Every good bench wood is a light one.
- Stability. A sauna cycles from bone dry to steam-soaked and back, weekly. Boards that cup, twist, or open their joints fail visibly within a season.
- Splinter behavior. Bare skin forgives a dent; it does not forgive a splinter. Fine, even grain earns its keep on every contact surface.
- Scent. Cedar’s aroma decides the purchase for many buyers — in both directions.
How do the sauna woods compare?
The table below covers the species commonly sold for sauna use in North America. Cost tiers are relative, and regional supply moves them around: cedar is affordable near the Pacific Northwest and premium in the Northeast, while aspen and alder — much of it Baltic-milled — ride import pricing.

Western red cedar — the North American classic
Cedar earned its reputation honestly. It is light, dimensionally stable, naturally decay-resistant, and gentle against skin — a genuinely good sauna wood, which is why a century of North American builds standardized on it. The aroma is the real decision point. Cedar’s scent comes from oils the wood keeps releasing at temperature, and it fills the room for years. Some households love that; some tire of it; a few cannot tolerate it. Western red cedar dust is a documented occupational asthma trigger among mill workers — CCOHS lists it among the classic causal agents — and while a finished board is a far smaller exposure than sawdust, scent-sensitive bathers should sit in a cedar sauna before committing to one. If you want aroma on demand rather than built into the walls, a few drops in the löyly water does it reversibly. Buy kiln-dried clear or STK (select tight knot) grades milled for interiors — never fence stock, and never anything pressure-treated.
Nordic spruce — the Finnish default
Spruce is what most Finnish saunas are actually made of: pale, knotty, inexpensive, and everywhere. It heats quickly, smells faintly of forest for the first season, and wears its knots without apology. The caution is resin. Spruce carries pitch pockets, and a pocket at bench height will eventually bleed. Finnish practice handles this simply — spruce goes on walls and ceilings, and skin lands on aspen or alder. A weeping knot on a wall is patina; on a bench it is a burn waiting for a thigh. Buy kiln-dried paneling graded for interior finish work with small, tight knots. Big-box framing lumber is not paneling; it is wetter, coarser, and its loose knots drop out as the room cycles. Priced per square foot, spruce frees more budget than any other choice — money better spent on the stove, the stones, and the benches than on the walls behind them.
Aspen — the bench favorite
Aspen is the classic Finnish bench wood: near-white, almost without knots, resin-free, and close to scentless. Its low density is the working feature — at roughly 420 kg/m³ it carries so little heat into skin that a top bench at full temperature stays sittable without a towel, though Finnish etiquette puts one there anyway. Suppliers often call aspen hypoallergenic. In practice the label means no resin and almost no scent or extractives; there is no formal certification behind the word, so treat it as shorthand rather than a medical claim. The tradeoffs are softness and blandness. Aspen dents under dropped buckets and marks under fingernails, and its pale uniformity reads as clinical to some eyes. As a working surface, none of that matters. It stays cool, clean, and splinter-free, which is the entire job description of a bench board.
Alder — the warm-toned Finnish favorite
Alder is the other traditional bench wood of Finland and the Baltics, and the one to choose when aspen looks too pale. Fresh-milled alder is a light honey brown with a subtle, even grain, and it deepens gracefully with heat and years. Like aspen it is resin-free and low-scent, and its density sits in the same comfortable range, so it passes the bare-skin test at full temperature. Alder also takes thermal modification unusually well — the roasted versions run from medium brown to near-espresso while keeping the fine grain — which is why so much of the premium dark paneling on the market is thermo-alder underneath. For a whole-room look, alder walls with alder benches give a warmer, more furniture-like interior than spruce, at a mid-tier price. Its main practical weakness matches aspen’s: it is soft enough to dent, so treat it as a finish surface, not a workbench.
Hemlock — the budget low-scent option
Hemlock is the value answer when cedar’s aroma or price rules it out. The boards are a pale warm tan with a fine, straight, even grain, mostly clear of knots, and nearly scent-free. Density and heat feel land close to the aspen–alder range, so hemlock works on benches as well as walls — one reason imported sauna kits lean on it so heavily. It has no Finnish pedigree; it is simply a sensible North American economy, and there is nothing wrong with that. Two cautions. First, buy kiln-dried, interior-milled stock — hemlock dries slowly and moves more than its calm grain suggests when it goes in wet. Second, grades vary widely between suppliers; hemlock’s reputation for splintering usually traces to coarse, fast-grown boards rather than the species itself. Run a hand down a sample before ordering a room’s worth.
Thermally modified wood — color and stability through the board
Thermo-aspen, thermo-spruce, and thermo-alder are the same species cooked in a low-oxygen steam kiln at roughly 190–212 °C — the classes the International ThermoWood Association standardized. The heat caramelizes the wood sugars, and the change goes all the way through: cut a thermo board and the end grain matches the face. Surface treatments behave the opposite way — a stained or wax-blackened board shows raw wood at every cut and reveal, which matters wherever ends stay visible. Treatment also lowers the wood’s equilibrium moisture, so boards move less through the sauna’s wet-dry cycle, and it measurably improves rot resistance — welcome in outdoor builds. The tradeoffs are real: thermo wood is more brittle, splits more readily near board ends (pre-drill there), and costs more. It still needs on-site acclimation like any other board. What you are buying is color that cannot chip off and geometry that holds.
Which wood goes where — benches, walls, or ceiling?
Benches first, because skin decides. Bench boards must be resin-free and low-density: aspen, alder, or their thermo versions, with clear-grade cedar as the North American alternative. Walls take any low-resin softwood, knots welcome. The ceiling sits in the hottest, steamiest layer of the room, so stability matters most there; use the same paneling as the walls and let the boards acclimate fully. Keep wood dominant overall — Trumpkin’s rule of thumb holds at least 90% of total wall area in softwood, because glass and stone are heat sinks that tax the heater and chill the seat beside them.

What should you never use in a sauna?
- Pressure-treated lumber, anywhere in the hot room. Treated stock is rated for ground contact, not for years of 90 °C against bare skin, and nobody has tested what that heat does to preservative release over a decade. This is not the place to find out.
- Resinous construction pine on contact surfaces. Pitch liquefies at bench temperatures. Walls tolerate it; thighs do not.
- Dense hardwoods on benches. Reclaimed oak looks romantic and burns at temperature; its tannins also stain black wherever sweat and water sit.
- Sheet goods in the room. Plywood, OSB, and MDF ride on adhesives never rated for sauna heat and moisture. Sheathing belongs outside the foil, not inside the room.
- Film finishes on anything you touch. Paint, varnish, and polyurethane blister, trap moisture, and off-gas. Finnish practice leaves interior wood bare; benches take, at most, a paraffin oil made for saunas.

Do darker woods make the sauna hotter?
Not meaningfully, as far as anyone has measured. A darker surface absorbs more of the stove’s radiant heat, so a black thermo-alder wall near the heater can feel slightly warmer to the hand than a pale aspen one. But the room’s temperature is set by the heater, the insulation, and the ventilation — not by paneling color. We know of no controlled comparison showing a dark-walled sauna heats faster or holds heat longer, and we would not build a wood decision on one. Choose the tone you want to sit inside for the next twenty years. Dark rooms feel smaller and calmer; pale rooms feel larger and brighter. Both throw the same steam.
How much does sauna wood cost?
Spruce is the cheapest room you can panel, with hemlock close behind. Cedar floats with region — modest near its Pacific Northwest supply, premium far from it. Aspen and alder sit mid-tier, and thermal modification adds a real premium on top: thermo boards commonly run two to four times the price of plain spruce paneling, market depending. How do you prepare sauna wood before it goes up?
- Acclimate. Store the board packages inside the sauna room for 1–2 weeks before installation, sealed until install day. The wood does its moving before it is nailed, instead of showing up later as gaps and cupping.
- Horizontal paneling: install from the top down, tongue up, groove down. A splash of löyly water drains out of the joint instead of pooling inside it.
- Vertical paneling: leave about 10 mm (0.4 in) of expansion gap at each corner, hidden under the corner moulding.
- Block for benches before the walls close. Nailers go inside the wall at every bench attachment height, before foil and paneling — bench weight belongs on studs, never on tongue-and-groove boards.
- Leave it bare. Walls and ceiling get no finish at all; benches take nothing beyond a sauna-grade paraffin oil — the neutral treatment Saunologia recommends, and even that is optional in a lightly used room.
