What should a beginner read first?
These four, in this order. Call it two hours. It front-loads the decisions that are expensive to reverse and leaves the pleasant ones — wood species, door glass, bench shape — for later, where they belong.

If you read only one, read the sequence. Home saunas rarely fail on carpentry. They fail on order — most often a heater bought from a photograph before anyone drew the room it has to heat.

Which decisions are costly to change later?
Three, and they are all settled on paper.
Room size and ceiling height. Heat stratifies, so the top bench is the only seat that matters, and Finnish practice wants your feet at or above the level of the heater’s stones. That geometry sets the ceiling — commonly near 84 inches — and the ceiling then sets the volume the heater has to hold. Going bigger is not generosity. It is capacity you buy and heat-up time you wait through, every session.
Heater kilowatts and the circuit that feeds them. A typical 6×7-foot room lands at 6–8 kW, and a 6 kW electric heater wants a dedicated 240-volt, 30-amp circuit on #10 copper. That is an electrician’s job, and panel capacity can quietly veto a heater choice before you have chosen it. Do this arithmetic in the heater sizing guide early, not after the drywall.
Ventilation. A sauna needs two vents, and the heater type decides where they go. The plan is nearly free while the framing is open and genuinely expensive once foil and boards are sealed over it. This is the single most postponed decision in home sauna building, and the one we would most like you to make first.
Everything else — species, hardware, lighting, the bucket — can be changed on a Saturday.
Do you need the Finnish part?
You do not need it to pass inspection. You need it to end up with a sauna rather than a hot closet.
The load-bearing idea is löyly (the steam thrown onto hot stones), which UNESCO’s 2020 heritage listing describes as “the spirit or steam released by casting water onto a stack of heated stones.” A Finnish sauna is not a dry sauna. The air sits at modest humidity, and then someone ladles water onto the stones and it does not.
