General Sauna Advice: What Holds and What Depends

Only a handful of sauna rules are general: heat the stones, give the room an inlet and an outlet, leave alcohol outside, dry it out afterwards. Everything else depends on your room. Ventilation shows why — Finnish measurements put the ankle-to-shoulder spread at up to 40 °C when vents are placed badly, under 10 °C when they are placed well.
There is a great deal of sauna advice in circulation, and much of it contradicts itself. Most of that contradiction is not a real dispute about facts. It is advice written for one kind of sauna being applied to another, a rule repeated long after its reason was forgotten, or a sentence written to move a heater off a shelf. A short list of rules holds everywhere. Nearly everything else depends on your room, and the honest answer there is a specific guide, not a general tip. Which sauna rules are actually general?
Heat the stones, not the air. The thermometer describes the air. The stones do the work. Water cast onto them produces what UNESCO’s 2020 listing of Finnish sauna culture calls “the spirit or steam” — löyly, the burst of steam thrown from hot stones. A room rushed to temperature over cool stones gives thin, sharp steam. Give the kiuas (the stone-topped sauna stove) its full heat-up time, every session, whatever it is fired with. Every sauna needs air in and air out. Not a vent — two. Which walls and heights depend on the heater, but the requirement never changes. Saunologia’s summary of VTT measurements is the argument for taking it seriously: badly placed openings can leave a 40 °C spread between a bather’s ankles and shoulders, while a good layout holds that difference under 10 °C. Nothing in the hot room should trap a person or trap water. The door swings outward and carries no latch beyond a roller or magnet, because heat degrades coordination and anyone inside has to be able to leave with a push. The room dries out afterwards — door open, vent open — because almost every mildew complaint in the sauna troubleshooting guide begins with a room closed up wet. Alcohol is the actual hazard. Not heat, not steam, not the height of the top bench. It is the one change that most reduces risk, and it costs nothing. The sauna will still be warm afterwards. Contraindications and hydration are set out in the sauna safety guide.
Specifications come from your room, never from a showroom. Heater power follows volume, then rises for glass and heat-storing surfaces — Harvia’s calculator asks for glass-door area and uninsulated wall area as separate inputs for that reason. Clearances follow the manual. Finland’s electrical safety authority, Tukes, states plainly that a heater’s stated distances to combustible structures cannot be reduced, not even with fire-protection board; your local code and inspector have the final word. Which questions have no general answer?
Five questions get asked as though there were one number. Here is what each actually turns on.

How do you tell good sauna advice from bad?
Four checks, in the order they are worth running — and a fifth for anything about health.
Does it name the reason, not just the rule? “Benches go high” is folklore. “Your feet should sit at or above the level of the stones, because heat stratifies” is a rule you can adapt to a basement ceiling. Advice without its reason cannot survive a room that differs from the writer’s.
Does it say which kind of sauna it means? An infrared cabin has no stones and no löyly. A steam room has nothing to throw water onto. Neither is lesser than a Finnish room — but their ventilation, wiring, humidity, and evidence base differ, and advice does not cross between them.
Does the number carry a unit and a source? Cubic metres, litres per second, millimetres of clearance, amps. A figure with no unit is decoration. A figure with no source is someone’s memory of a figure.
Does the person giving it sell the thing? Not disqualifying — heater makers publish the best sizing and clearance data anywhere, and their manuals govern your install. But treat a vendor blog post as an advertisement with footnotes, and check comfort and health claims against a body with nothing to sell.
Health claims get a fifth check: effect size, study design, and hedge, welded together. The strongest sauna finding we have is an association from one Finnish cohort of 2,315 men followed about two decades, in which the most frequent bathers had a lower rate of sudden cardiac death than once-a-week bathers (HR 0.37, 95% CI 0.18–0.75). What do first-time owners worry about too much?
The exact temperature, mostly. The same reading feels entirely different over hot stones than over cool ones. Wood species is next: any low-resin softwood that tolerates the heat makes the same steam, so species matters where your skin touches it. After that you are buying a colour and a smell — a fine reason to spend money, if you know that is what you are buying.

Where should you start reading?
If you are planning a build, work through the planning sequence for a first sauna before buying anything — the order of those decisions is the whole trick, because size waits on location and the heater waits on size.
