Infrared Sauna: What It Is and What It Is Not

An infrared sauna is a wooden cabinet with electric radiant panels built into its walls. The panels warm your skin and the surfaces around you directly, so the air inside can stay around 120–150°F while you sweat. A Finnish sauna runs 175–195°F and works the other way around — hot air and hot stones heat you. The cabin has no stones, no ladle, and nothing to pour water on. It arrives flat-packed, screws together in an afternoon, and plugs into the wall.
That last sentence is why most people buy one, and it is a perfectly good reason.
What is actually inside the cabin?
Panels, a controller, and wood. Far-infrared emitters — carbon sheets or ceramic rods, depending on the maker — sit behind a wood or glass face, wired to a thermostat. There is no stone mass, no water system, and no plumbing. Nothing inside stores heat, which is why a cabin reaches working temperature in about ten to fifteen minutes and loses it just as fast when you switch it off.
A traditional sauna spends its budget on mass and containment: a kiuas (the stone-topped sauna stove), a framed and insulated room, a foil vapor barrier, a pair of vents, and a dedicated circuit. An infrared cabin spends its budget on panels and a box. What does an infrared cabin ask of your house?
Much less than a sauna does. That is the honest headline, and for many buyers it settles the matter before any health argument begins.

The last row is the one renters care about and the one showrooms rarely mention. A cabin is a possession. A sauna is a room.
What can it not do?
It cannot make löyly — the steam and spirit released when water is thrown on hot stones. Nothing in the cabin can. There are no stones to receive the water and no reason for a ladle to exist. Whatever else an infrared cabin gives you, it does not give you the swing from dry air to a wave of steam and back, which is the cycle Finnish bathing is built around.
Worth knowing, because the marketing gets it backwards: the difference is not radiant heat versus some other kind. Liikkanen, writing at Saunologia, points out that radiation is generally the dominant mode of heat transfer in a traditional sauna as well — convection matters less than most people assume. What separates the two appliances is temperature, stones, and water, not the word infrared.
One consequence runs only in one direction. An electric sauna can be held down around 60°C with a long preheat and will feel something like an infrared cabin. An infrared cabin cannot be talked into producing löyly at any setting.
Bench height changes meaning too. In a sauna, heat stratifies and the top bench is the good seat. In a cabin, there is no meaningful gradient — what matters is where the panels are aimed, which is why good units place them in front, behind, and low near the calves.
Does the sweating mean the same thing?
Sweat is sweat, but the evidence attached to it is not interchangeable. The famous Finnish numbers come from the Kuopio cohort: 2,315 middle-aged men followed about twenty years, in which the most frequent bathers had roughly a third the rate of sudden cardiac death of once-a-week bathers — an association from one observational study, not proof, and the researchers say so themselves. Every man in it used a traditional hot-air sauna.
The 2024 review by Laukkanen and Kunutsor is blunt about the comparison: Finnish saunas have the most consistent and robust evidence, while infrared and Waon-therapy trials are small — thirteen fibromyalgia patients here, eight diabetes patients there — and the authors call for large, rigorous trials that have not been run. So the plain answer is that infrared may well do you some good, the evidence for it is thin, and nobody gets to lend it the Finnish mortality figures.
Discount the rest of the brochure while you are at it. Sweat is about 99 percent water; your liver and kidneys handle the detoxing free of charge, as the detox myth page explains at length. Calorie counts printed on infrared spec sheets are marketing arithmetic.
Who is a cabin the right purchase for?
Someone who wants gentle heat with little construction. Specifically: renters and apartment dwellers, houses without a spare 240-volt circuit, people who find 190°F genuinely unpleasant, anyone with fifteen minutes rather than an hour, and anyone whose available space is a corner rather than a room.
It is the wrong purchase for someone who wants what a sauna is for — the stones, the steam, the heat you control by hand. That person will use the cabin twice and resent it. Better to build small and hot than large and mild.
Steam rooms sit in a third category again, near total humidity at much lower heat, with their own evidence gap; we keep sauna versus steam room separate for that reason.
UNESCO’s 2020 heritage listing names electric, wood-heated, smoke, and infrared saunas together, with no hierarchy among them, and that generosity is fair. It is also not a shopping recommendation. - Can you pour water on an infrared sauna?
- No. There are no stones to throw it on, and the panels are electrical heating elements behind a wood or glass face. Water belongs nowhere near them. If the steam cycle is what you want from a heat bath, an infrared cabin is the wrong appliance to buy.
- Can a traditional sauna be run at infrared-like temperatures?
- Roughly. Saunologia’s Lassi A. Liikkanen notes that radiant heat dominates in a traditional sauna too, and that an electric sauna held near 60°C with a long preheat approximates the milder feel. The stones and the option of löyly stay available, which an infrared cabin can never offer.
- Does an infrared cabin need its own room or ventilation?
- Not in the way a built sauna does. A traditional room needs a foil vapor barrier and a pair of located vents. An infrared cabin is freestanding furniture that sits in a finished room and shares that room’s air. Give it clearance at the back and a level floor.
