Sauna vs Steam Room: Temperature, Cost, Evidence

How is a sauna different from a steam room?

The split is temperature versus humidity. A Finnish sauna heats dry air to 80–100°C (176–212°F) and keeps base humidity low, around 5–20% — until you throw löyly (the steam from water thrown onto the hot stones), and the room turns briefly, deliberately humid. A steam room does the opposite. It holds a much cooler 40–50°C (104–122°F) but saturates the air to nearly 100% humidity, constantly, from a steam generator. One is hot air you humidify on demand; the other is warm fog you sit inside. A Finnish sauna, worth saying plainly, is not a dry sauna — the whole point is that you control the moisture yourself.

The heat source is the other fault line. A sauna is built around the kiuas (the stone-topped sauna stove), and the stones are the point — you control the room by ladling water onto them. A steam room has no stones and no stove; a sealed electric or gas steam generator pipes vapor in. That one difference cascades into everything else: materials, feel, cost, and the evidence behind each.

Which one actually feels hotter?

By the thermometer the sauna wins easily. By the body it is not that simple. In a steam room the air is already saturated, so your sweat cannot evaporate — it just sits and beads on your skin, and evaporation is the main way the body sheds heat. Blocked from cooling itself, you feel a 45°C steam room as heavy and close, sometimes more oppressive than a 90°C sauna where the dry air lets sweat flash off. A sauna’s dry heat stings less on the skin and lets you breathe easily, right up until you throw a löyly and a wave of heat rolls off the lauteet (the tiered sauna benches). Finnish measurements make that wave plain: a löyly raises the air temperature only a few degrees — what hits you is humidity, which can quadruple in seconds. Neither bath is gentle. They are demanding in different ways, and the choice is mostly about which kind of demand you enjoy.

How do you actually use each one?

The rhythms differ. A sauna session is a cycle: warm up in the dry heat, throw a löyly when you want a surge, then step out to cool down — a cold shower, a plunge, or just cold air — and go back in for another round. The cooling is not a break from the sauna; in Finland it is half the point, and it is why saunas are built near lakes and rivers. A steam room is more of a single continuous sit. You settle into the fog and stay until you have had enough, with less of the in-and-out rhythm, because there are no stones to feed and no löyly to time. If you like ritual and control — heat, water, cold, repeat — the sauna gives you more to do. If you want to switch your brain off in warm mist, the steam room asks less of you.

Which has stronger health evidence?

The long-term health findings people cite for “the sauna” are Finnish-sauna findings, and they do not automatically transfer to steam rooms. The headline numbers come from one observational cohort — the Kuopio study, 2,315 Finnish men followed for about two decades. In it, men who bathed four to seven times a week had roughly 63% lower risk of sudden cardiac death than once-a-week bathers (HR 0.37, 95% CI 0.18–0.75), reported by Jari Laukkanen and colleagues in JAMA Internal Medicine. That is an association from a single cohort of traditional sauna users, not proof — and it is not evidence about steam rooms, which have no comparable long-term outcome data at all.

What steam rooms offer is short-term respiratory comfort. Warm, fully saturated air can feel soothing and may loosen mucus, which is why people with congestion often reach for one — but that relief is largely subjective and short-lived, not a proven treatment for asthma or bronchitis. A steam room has no löyly — a different bath, not a lesser one

UNESCO’s 2020 listing of Finnish sauna culture on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage treats electric, wood, and smoke saunas as equal forms, with no hierarchy among them. Finnish practice is more specific about what makes a sauna a sauna: a kiuas, stones, and löyly you throw yourself. By that definition a steam room is simply a different thing — there are no stones, so there is no löyly to throw. That is not a demotion. Steam bathing has its own long lineage, from Roman thermae to the Turkish hammam, and it does what it does well. It just is not a sauna, and calling it one flattens two traditions into a single marketing category. The Finnish Sauna Society (Suomen Saunaseura) keeps the definition tight for exactly this reason.

What does each cost to build and run?

Different builds, different budgets. A home sauna is a wood-lined room with a kiuas, two working vents, and — for an electric heater — a dedicated 240V circuit. A steam room is a fully sealed, waterproofed enclosure of tile, glass, and non-porous surfaces, with a sloped ceiling to shed condensation and a steam generator plumbed and wired behind the wall. The steam room is usually the more construction-intensive of the two, because every surface has to survive constant condensation and every seam has to stay watertight, where a sauna’s wood is forgiving by comparison. Which needs more upkeep?

Steam rooms demand more cleaning, for a simple reason: warm, permanently wet, non-porous surfaces are exactly what mildew and bacteria like. A public steam room should be disinfected on a regular schedule, and a home one needs wiping down and drying out between uses to stay hygienic. A sauna runs hot and dry, which is far less hospitable to microbes; its wood is cleaned occasionally and otherwise left to breathe. Neither is maintenance-free — a sauna’s kiuas stones get re-stacked or replaced over time, and its benches and vents want the odd wash — but the steam room’s constant condensation makes hygiene an ongoing chore rather than an occasional one. Who prefers which, and can you have both?

Yes, you can have both, and many gyms and spas do. Choose by what you want from the heat. People who want intense, dry, breathe-easy heat they can dial up with a ladle of water tend toward the sauna; people who find dry heat harsh, or who like warm saturated air for sinuses and skin, tend toward the steam room. At home they are separate builds — a sauna and a steam room do not share a room, because one wants dry wood and the other wants sealed tile — but nothing stops you from installing both if the space and budget allow.
