How to Build a Custom Sauna: What Custom Buys You

A custom sauna is one whose dimensions and bench layout you draw for your own space instead of picking from a catalog. Custom buys fit: an odd footprint, a top bench set 100–120 cm below the ceiling, your choice of heater. It costs you the cut list, the instructions, and the hours.

Custom means one narrow thing in practice: you draw the room’s dimensions and bench layout for your own space instead of choosing them off a page of standard sizes. Everything downstream is the work every sauna needs — framing, one taped foil vapor barrier, a ventilated air gap, tongue-and-groove cladding, two vents, a dedicated circuit. What changes is that nobody hands you a cut list, and nobody has already checked that the parts fit together.

What does “custom” actually buy you?

Five decisions, and only five. The rest of the usual wish list — better wood, a bigger heater, a glass door — a catalog will sell you too.

Height is the one that matters. Finnish bench guidance puts a seated bather’s shoulders 100–120 cm below the ceiling, and Saunologia names anything past 125 cm as the mistake to avoid; Trumpkin’s Notes lands on 112–120 cm for the sitting bench, with the foot bench above stone level. Ceiling and top bench are therefore a single decision, taken together, before anything else. A room drawn around that number bathes differently from a room drawn around a shipping carton. Which rooms actually need a custom build?

Some do. Most do not, and it is worth knowing early which yours is.

  1. The footprint is not a clean rectangle. Chimney chases, furnace clearances, knee walls, and sloped basement ceilings all defeat precut packages.
  2. The ceiling is unusual. Under about 6 ft 8 in, the bench math gets tight and needs deliberate work. Over 8 ft, you can build a better room than any catalog offers.
  3. You want a particular heater. Wood stoves, large stone masses, and floor-standing units carry clearances and a chimney route that decide the wall layout. Size the room and the heater together, using the heater sizing rules.
  4. Someone wants to lie down. A 180 cm bench is a different room from a 150 cm bench, and no cushion fixes it.
  5. Glass drives the design. A full glass front changes both heat loss and where the benches can sit — see sauna doors, windows, and glass.

Where does custom cost you?

Not mainly in money. Materials for a scratch-built room usually come in under a comparable package. The costs land elsewhere.

  • No instructions. A kit ships a sequence. Custom means you own the sequence, including the parts that go quietly wrong: one vapor barrier only, foil taped continuous, a 0.75-inch air gap behind the boards.
  • You are the general contractor. The electrician wants the heater model and its exact position before rough-in. Holding the order of operations across trades is now your job.
  • Ordering. Cladding is bought by lineal foot with a waste allowance, not by room. Miscount and you wait on a second order, possibly from a different lot.
  • Nobody to call. A package has a vendor when something does not fit. A custom room has your own drawing.
  • Hours. Elevations, a bench section, vent placement — real work before any lumber arrives, and the cheapest hours in the build. Spend them deliberately with the sauna planning steps.

Which decision comes first?

Order matters more than people expect, because each choice narrows the next.

Ceiling height first. Then the top bench, set 100–120 cm below it. Then the heater: output from room volume, position from required clearances and from where legs will be. Then the door and any glass, which take whatever wall is left. Vents get drawn last — but they get drawn, never drilled in afterward — and the ventilation layout depends on the heater type, so it could not be settled earlier anyway.

Work in that order and the room resolves. Work backwards from a door you already bought, and something further up the list has to give.

What stays the same no matter what you draw?

The physics is not negotiable, and it is identical in a kit, a barrel, and a room designed from scratch — the same list the home sauna build sequence walks through in order. One vapor barrier on the warm side, taped continuous. Mineral wool in the stud bays. An air gap behind the boards, with the assembly outside the foil free to dry outward, as Suomen Saunaseura’s construction guidance insists. Two vents placed for the heater you actually installed. A dedicated 240-volt circuit sized by a licensed electrician. Benches high enough that löyly — the rush of steam thrown onto hot stones — reaches shoulders rather than the ceiling above them.

Custom exempts you from none of that. It only means you chose the dimensions, which is a smaller privilege than it sounds and a larger responsibility. If the drawing reads as a chore rather than a pleasure, a kit is not a lesser sauna, and the full build sequence is the same either way.

The lauteet — the tiered benches, always plural in Finnish — are what people remember. Nobody has ever walked out of a sauna talking about the footprint.

Questions people ask

What size should a custom sauna be?
Start from the benches, not the floor. Finnish practice allows about 60 cm of top-bench length per bather and 45–60 cm of depth for sitting. Two people fit a 5 × 6 ft room; four want closer to 6 × 8. Ceiling height matters more than either dimension.
Do you need drawings or a permit for a custom sauna?
Almost always a permit for the electrical work, and often one for an outdoor structure above your jurisdiction’s size threshold. Interior carpentry rules vary, so call the building department. Draw an elevation of every wall regardless — your electrician will ask exactly where the heater and its sensor land.
Can you mix a kit with a custom build?
Yes, and it is the common middle path. Frame the room to your own dimensions, then buy cladding, benches, and the heater as a package sized to what you drew. You get the geometry you wanted and somebody else’s material list. Order cladding by lineal foot, not by room.
