Buying a Sauna: the Independent Guide

A home sauna rewards the buyer who will actually use it. If two or three evenings a week in the heat sounds like your life, the ownership case is strong: electricity for a two-hour session runs about $1.40 at 2026 average US rates, the health evidence is genuinely encouraging when read honestly, and a well-built hot room outlasts its heater several times over. If the sauna would sit cold, no discount fixes that.
Sauna salesmanship has always run on a list of reasons to buy. Most of those reasons are real. A few are folklore that survives because nobody checks it. Below are the seven that hold up under scrutiny, each with the hedge it deserves — and, at the end, the three commonly repeated reasons that do not hold up at all.
Why do people buy home saunas?

A shared ritual. Put this first; it is the reason owners give years later. An hour of heat with family or friends — phones left outside, nothing to do but talk or sit quietly — is a rare kind of time. UNESCO inscribed sauna culture in Finland on its Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2020 precisely because the practice is passed down in families rather than bought in spas, and institutions like Suomen Saunaseura, the Finnish Sauna Society, exist to keep that rhythm alive. A sauna at home makes the ritual possible on an ordinary Tuesday.

Health, with the hedges attached. Sauna literature loves the phrase “well-known fact.” Retire it. What we actually have is good but observational: in a 20-year Finnish cohort of 2,315 men, those who bathed 4–7 times a week had a 63% lower rate of sudden cardiac death than once-a-week bathers (Laukkanen et al., JAMA Internal Medicine, 2015). That is an association, not a promise — one cohort, mostly men, no randomization. Recovery you can feel. Heat opens skin and muscle blood flow, and sore muscles genuinely feel better in a hot room after training. Whether sauna measurably speeds recovery is less settled — the studies are small and their results mixed. Sauna complements exercise; it does not replace it. Buy it for the feeling, which is real, rather than the performance gain, which is unproven.

Respiratory comfort — a mild claim, kept mild. Warm, humid air after a löyly (the burst of steam off the hot stones) can loosen congestion and feels soothing on irritated airways. The same Finnish cohort showed lower rates of pneumonia among frequent bathers — again an association — and one small 1990 trial of 25 volunteers (Ernst and colleagues) found fewer colds in the sauna group, a result never replicated at scale. This is a comfort measure, not medicine. And one rule needs no updating: never sauna with a fever.

Property appeal — heavily hedged. For years the standard sauna-sales line promised you would recoup double your investment at resale. No US appraisal data supports that figure, or anything close to it. In Finland a sauna is expected equipment. In North America it is a niche amenity that helps some listings and does nothing for others. Count resale value as zero in your decision. A clean, well-built room may help a house show; a damp plywood closet with a space heater will hurt it.

Convenience. A home sauna is the rare escape that asks you to travel nowhere. A membership sauna is a drive, a schedule, and too often a tepid public box with a sign forbidding water on the rocks. A sauna at home is thirty steps and a switch. The sauna nobody drives to is the one that actually gets used twice a week.

It costs almost nothing to run. The one sales claim that survives the math untouched. The full arithmetic follows.
Three reasons that circulate widely do not survive contact with evidence. Weight loss: the water weight returns by morning, and the “burns calories like light jogging” line traces to no study anyone can produce. The tax deduction: reckless advice wherever it appears — a sauna is a medical expense only under narrow, documented circumstances, so ask a tax professional, not a sauna website. And status, the promise that a sauna will impress the neighbors. Envy remains available. It is a poor reason for a five-figure purchase.
What does a two-hour session cost in 2026?
About $1.40 at the current average US residential electricity rate. The worked example behind that number has circulated in sauna sales copy since the mid-2000s, when the average rate was $0.116/kWh and the answer came out to 93 cents. The setup is standard: a 5×7 ft hot room, a 6.0 kW electric kiuas (the sauna stove), and the average US rate. The heater pulls full power for the first hour while the room and stones come up to temperature. In the second hour the thermostat only cycles to hold heat — call it 2.0 kWh.

The 93-cent sauna is now the $1.40 sauna — a 51% increase over 21 years, which is gentler than most of what has happened to household costs since 2005. Your state moves the number: near 11¢/kWh in the Dakotas you still get roughly the 2005 price; California around 30¢ pays about $2.40; Hawaii above 40¢ tops $3. The assumptions hold up, too — a tight, well-insulated room cycles less in hour two, a glass-heavy room more. How do you judge a sauna kit before you buy?
Ignore the photography; it is the same cedar glow on every site. Five things decide whether a kit is good: the heater, the wood, the parts list, the freight terms, and the warranty.
The heater decides the sauna. A kit is, in the end, a box of boards around its heater. Look for a named brand with a North American parts channel — Harvia, HUUM, Tylö, EOS, and Saunum all qualify — and a UL or ETL listing, because your electrician and your inspector will both ask. Heating elements and stones are consumables; a no-name kiuas with no parts channel is a disposable appliance. Size it to room volume, not floor area — Harvia publishes its sizing calculator in exactly those terms, adding power for glass and masonry surfaces. The wood, in writing. A legitimate seller names species and grade: clear Western red cedar, thermally modified aspen or spruce, and Nordic white spruce with tight knots are all honest choices. Unspecified “premium softwood” is where corners get cut. Wall cladding should be tongue-and-groove around 5/8 inch thick — thin 8 mm paneling telegraphs every stud and cups in the heat — and bench tops need thicker stock still, because benches carry your weight at the room’s hottest elevation. The parts list, complete. A real kit includes wall and ceiling cladding, foil vapor barrier and foil tape, bench framing and tops, the heater with stones and controls, a door, hardware, drawings — and two vents. Ventilation is the tell. The freight, honestly described. Most kits arrive as curbside LTL freight: a several-hundred-pound pallet at the end of your driveway, not two people carrying boxes to the garage. Ask before ordering. When it lands, inspect before the driver leaves and note any damage on the delivery receipt — freight claims die without that note. Then let the wood acclimate indoors for a few days before assembly.
The warranty, read to the end. The heater warranty is usually separate from the cabin warranty; one to five years residential is the current spread. Read what voids it — wrong stone size, ignored clearances, an indoor unit installed outdoors. The corners are real: Tukes, Finland’s safety authority, audited packaged backyard saunas and found heater clearances too tight, heater-and-chimney pairings never verified as compatible, and marketing that placed saunas closer to buildings than safety rules allow. Then ask the question the document will not answer: who replies to a parts email in year six? Established heater brands do. That answer is most of what you are paying for.
Which marketing claims should scare you off?
Four pitches predict a bad purchase reliably enough to treat them as disqualifying.
“Detox.” Sweat is about 99 percent water; your liver and kidneys handle toxins free of charge, sauna or no sauna. A seller leading with toxin talk is telling you their marketing budget outranks their engineering. The detox myth page has the full accounting.
“Medical grade.” No such certification exists for saunas. The FDA does not approve saunas to treat, cure, or prevent anything, and an honest seller never implies otherwise. The phrase decorates exactly the products that could not pass a plainer test.
EMF panic. Mostly an infrared-cabin marketing war — ultra-low EMF, unlike the supposedly dangerous competitors. When fear of the competition is the chief selling point, walk. The perpetual countdown. A $6,000 price crossed out to $2,999, expiring tonight, every night. The price is $2,999. The real question is what was removed from the kit to reach it — usually the heater brand, the wood thickness, and the vents. All three are checked above.
So is a home sauna worth buying?
For a regular bather, yes — comfortably. Run the arithmetic with your own numbers: an $8,000 kit used three evenings a week for ten years is roughly 1,560 sessions, about $5.15 per session for the room and around $6.50 with electricity. Few purchases at that price deliver a weekly ritual, a warm hour with the people you live with, and a habit the best available evidence associates — hedges and all — with better outcomes. For the buyer imagining a resale windfall or a medical device, no — neither claim survives scrutiny.
