Sauna Build Timeline: What a Time-Lapse Leaves Out

In short

A two-minute build video compresses something like 50 to 90 working hours and three to six weeks of calendar. Most of the calendar is not work: permit review, two electrician visits, an inspection before the walls close, and one to two weeks with the cladding acclimating inside the room.

A time-lapse records only the minutes when hands are moving. Everything else a sauna build spends its calendar on — the plan review, the electrician’s second visit, a stack of boards sitting in the room doing nothing — produces no footage. From bare studs, a first indoor sauna runs roughly 50 to 90 hours of work spread across three to six weeks. The gap between those two numbers is the entire subject of this page.

How long does each stage take?

The figures below assume the common first build: a 6×7-foot indoor room framed from scratch, electric heater, one reasonably handy person with occasional help. They are planning estimates for scheduling, not stopwatch data, and a first attempt tends to land at the slow end of every row. Cladding is the longest job with a tool in your hand. It is not the longest item on the calendar. Nothing on that list is.

Which stages are waiting rather than working?

Four, and together they usually outweigh the carpentry.

Plan review. The building department has its own queue. A hardwired 240-volt heater circuit is a permitted job nearly everywhere in North America. Applying takes an hour; hearing back can take a fortnight.

Two electrician visits, not one. Rough-in happens with the stud bays open — supply cable, sensor cable, light feed. Final connections happen after the heater is mounted, weeks later. Both are scheduled around somebody else’s week, and where permits apply, an inspection sits between the rough-in and the moment you may insulate.

Board acclimation. Tongue-and-groove cladding wants one to two weeks inside the room it will live in, packaging sealed until install day, so the wood moves before it is nailed rather than afterward as gaps and cupped faces. Thermory’s installation documentation is explicit about this, and it is the most commonly skipped instruction in a first build.

Ordered parts. Tempered glass cannot be cut or drilled after manufacture, so the sequence is fixed: frame the opening, measure it in place, then order. No amount of Saturday effort compresses that.

None of it is dramatic. All of it is why a build with forty working hours in it took two months.

Where do first builds actually lose time?

Not in the framing. In going backwards.

  • A vent cut into a finished wall. Openings get framed during framing, or the fix means opening the foil and repairing a barrier that was supposed to be continuous. The ventilation guide covers why the layout has to be chosen before the studs go up.
  • No blocking behind the benches. Bench loads land on framing, never on paneling. Finding that out after the cladding is up means hunting for studs, or rebuilding.
  • A missed cable. Anything the electrician did not run during rough-in is behind foil now.
  • Heater sized after the room was drawn. Glass area drives the sizing hard, and two sizes up can move clearances, benches, and the circuit already pulled.
  • Boards installed dry from the truck. The time saved comes back as gaps the first heating season.

What can you finish in a single weekend?

One phase. Framing and blocking is a weekend. Insulation, foil, and furring together is a weekend. Cladding is a long weekend, or two normal ones if the ceiling fights you. Benches are a weekend. Set them end to end with a week of ordinary life between each and you have the three-to-six-week calendar the videos are made of — they simply drop the weeks.

A pre-cut package changes the arithmetic honestly: boards arrive cut, bench frames arrive drilled, and the carpentry compresses toward one weekend. It does not compress the permit, the electrician, or the acclimation. The kit-versus-DIY comparison sets the two routes side by side.

What changes for an outdoor build?

Roughly double, and often more. An outdoor sauna is a small building with a sauna inside it: a foundation that must cure before anything frames on it, then sheathing, a weather barrier, a rainscreen gap, siding, and a roof — all before the interior assembly an indoor build starts with on day one. Weather gets a vote too. Wood heat adds a chimney installed as a listed system, with its own inspection.

The interior work is identical in every route. The physics does not care whether the box around it is a basement corner or a cedar shed. The full build sequence covers that interior assembly in the order it has to happen.

How should you actually plan the calendar?

Backwards from the two dates you do not control. Call the building department and ask how long review takes. Call an electrician and ask how far out they are booking. Those two answers set the shape of the schedule; the carpentry fills the gaps between them.

Then buy the cladding early and stand it in the room while you frame — the acclimation clock runs for free during work you were doing anyway. Draw the vents, the bench blocking, and the heater position before the first stud goes up. Those three are what the build checklist gates the walls closing on, and they are the decisions that get genuinely expensive when made late. A build video ends on the first ladle of water hitting the stones. That part is accurate. What it does not show is that the löyly — the steam thrown from water on hot stones — arrives on a Tuesday in the fifth week, quietly, after the inspector has been and gone. Hyvät löylyt!

Can you build a sauna in one weekend?
