Does Sweating Remove Toxins? What Sweat Actually Does

Does sweating remove toxins?

No. Sweating is how the body sheds heat, not how it sheds waste. Sweat is more than 99 percent water; the rest is mostly salt, lactate and a few antibodies. It comes to the surface so it can evaporate and cool you, which is the entire design brief. A hot room does not reroute your metabolism through your pores.

The confusion is understandable, because sweating feels productive. The heart speeds up, the skin runs wet, and you step off the bench lighter than you sat down. All of that is real. None of it is elimination. The lighter feeling is the water you will drink back within the hour.

The kidney numbers come from the US National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases: roughly 150 quarts of blood filtered in a day, of which only one to two quarts leave as urine. The remainder is reabsorbed. That system runs continuously, at the same rate, whether you are on a sauna bench or asleep on the couch.

Trace heavy metals and compounds such as BPA genuinely do turn up in sweat, and that is the grain of truth the pitch is built on. Scale is the problem. An expert estimate cited in Science Feedback’s expert-verified review of the claim puts two litres of heavy sweat — far more than one session produces — at under a tenth of a nanogram of such pollutants. How much do you actually sweat in a sauna?

More than most people guess, and it still changes nothing. The Finnish sauna reference Saunologia puts the rate at about 0.6 to 1.0 kilograms per hour in a hot room; a normal session lands near half a litre. Skin temperature climbs toward 40 °C, while core temperature moves far less and far more slowly.

Half a litre of water weighs about a pound. That is the entire mechanism behind the post-sauna weigh-in, and behind the wraps and belts that promise the same thing in a smaller package. The pound is not fat and it is not waste. It is fluid your body will replace at the first glass of water, because it needs it.

What does the heat give you instead?

Something smaller than the detox story, and considerably more reliable. Suomen Saunaseura, the Finnish Sauna Society, describes the physiological load of a sauna as comparable to brisk walking — if you can walk without getting out of breath, you can generally sit in a hot room. The same page quotes Professor Lasse Viinikka to the effect that the sauna’s greatest health effect is the relaxing one, ahead of anything measured in a laboratory.

The long-term research points in a good direction and stops short of proof. In a Finnish observational cohort of 2,315 middle-aged men followed a median 20.7 years, the most frequent bathers had about 63 percent lower risk of sudden cardiac death than once-a-week bathers (hazard ratio 0.37, 95% CI 0.18–0.75). One cohort, mostly men, no randomization, and the researchers hedge it themselves. Treat sauna as a pleasant, low-risk habit that probably helps, alongside exercise rather than instead of it. What should you do about the fluid you lose?

Replace it, and take the rest of the advice seriously while you are at it. Drink water before and after. Stand up slowly, since much of your blood volume has moved out to the skin. Leave at the first sign of lightheadedness, headache or nausea rather than finishing the round.

Alcohol is the one hard line. Hannuksela and Ellahham’s review of sauna benefits and risks is blunt about it — drinking in the heat raises the risk of low blood pressure, arrhythmia and sudden death. The heat will still be there after the beer. Take them in that order, and read the safety guidance and contraindication list if you have a heart condition, are pregnant, or take blood-pressure or diuretic medication.

Then throw a löyly — the burst of steam when water meets hot stones — and settle back. Throwing löyly properly is the part Finns would name first, and it asks nothing of you but patience.
