Sauna Equipment: What a Working Sauna Needs

In short

A working sauna needs four things: a stove packed with stones, two vents, a bucket and ladle, and a thermometer. Everything else is an accessory. The test is blunt — take it out, and if the room still makes steam, it was never equipment. Electric heaters take 5–10 cm stones.

Sauna catalogs blur two lists into one. The first is equipment: the parts that make heat, make steam, and move air. The second is accessories: the parts that make the room pleasant to sit in. Both are worth owning. Only the first decides if the room works as a sauna at all.

The dividing test is blunt. Take the item out of the room. If the sauna still reaches temperature, still accepts a thrown ladleful of water, and still dries out afterward, it was an accessory.

What counts as sauna equipment?

Four things, and three of them get installed rather than bought loose.

That is the whole list. It has not grown in a century, and UNESCO’s 2020 inscription of Finnish sauna culture describes the practice in almost the same terms — a stove, stones, water, and the steam you make yourself.

Why are the stones equipment rather than a detail?

Because the stones, not the elements, are what a sauna actually bathes in. They are a thermal battery: mass that soaks up heat slowly during the warm-up and gives it back in one violent burst when water lands on it. Choosing the heater is choosing how much stone you get, which is why the heater guides spend as much time on stone capacity as on kilowatts.

Size follows the heater type. Harvia specifies 5–10 cm stones for electric heaters, because they fit down between the heating elements; wood-burning stoves take larger 10–15 cm stones, with smaller ones on top where the water lands. Stack them loosely. Tightly packed stones choke the airflow through the heater body, and that airflow is how the heat reaches the room.

Stones also wear out, which surprises people who assume rock is permanent. Heat cycling splits them, the fragments settle into the cavities, and the heater slowly strangles itself. Harvia’s guidance is to rearrange the pile at least once a year, more often in a busy sauna, tapping each stone against another as you go — a crack or a hollow, shallow sound means it is finished. Sweep the grit out of the bottom before restacking. It is an hour’s work and it changes how the room feels more than any purchase will.

Why do two vents count as equipment?

Because one vent is a hole and two are a system. Air has to come in somewhere and leave somewhere else, or the room simply recirculates its own damp exhale.

In a gravity system, Saunologia argues the intake belongs above the stone level rather than below it, so incoming air mixes with the rising heat instead of pooling as a cold layer at the floor. The exhaust sits high, at the ceiling line, where the moisture and spent heat collect — a 100 mm adjustable vent at minimum, with roughly 300 cm² of combined opening area. A mechanical downdraft system reverses the logic and pulls low, near the floor. Both work; mixing the two halves of them does not. The reason vents are equipment and not trim is that they are cut once, while the walls are open, and they are miserable to add later. The same goes for the drying path outside the hot room — Suomen Saunaseura’s construction guidance treats the ventilation gap behind the insulation as a structural requirement, not an option, because that is where a sauna quietly rots.

What do the bucket and ladle actually do?

They make the steam. Without them the room is a hot cabinet, and the entire Finnish argument for a sauna disappears.

The kiulu is the reservoir; the ladle is the dosing instrument. One ladleful at a time is the traditional rhythm, and it is a rhythm rather than a splash for good reason: a whole bucket poured at once floods the stones, drops their temperature, and produces a wet, heavy room instead of a sharp rising löyly. Do you need a thermometer and hygrometer?

The thermometer, effectively yes. Mount it above the top bench, out of the heater’s plume, and expect 80–100 °C once the room has heat-soaked. It is how you learn your own sauna’s timing.

The hygrometer is the more interesting instrument, and it is a diagnostic rather than a decoration. Between throws a Finnish sauna sits low, around 5–20% relative humidity, spiking each time water hits the stones. If the needle is still high hours after a session, the room is not drying, and that is a ventilation fault rather than a gear problem.

What is not equipment?

Everything else, and there is a great deal of everything else. Backrests, headrests, sand timers, bench covers, scent oils, and a birch whisk all improve a sauna without being load-bearing; salt panels and chromotherapy packages improve mostly the invoice. One category sits oddly between the lists: controls. A wall panel or an app is not equipment in the sense used here — the sauna runs without it — but it decides when the room gets switched on, and a sauna used twice a week beats a better sauna used monthly. If you are still choosing a stove, start with the heater, size it honestly to the room, and cut the vents before the cladding goes up. The rest can arrive whenever it likes.

Questions people ask

Can an electric sauna heater run without stones?
No. Manufacturers require the elements to be covered, and an uncovered element heats air without storing anything. The stones are the thermal mass that flashes water into steam. Run the heater bare and you have a space heater in a wooden closet, plus a warranty you have voided.
How often do sauna stones need attention?
Harvia recommends rearranging them at least once a year, more often in a heavily used sauna. Tap the stones together as you go: any that crack or sound hollow have broken down and should be replaced. Sweep the accumulated grit out of the heater body before restacking.
What electrical equipment is allowed inside the hot room?
Very little. Tukes, Finland's safety authority, states that saunas must have no sockets and no separate switches — the light switch goes outside the room. Controls built into the heater are fine. Every sauna circuit except the heater and its own equipment needs 30 mA residual-current protection.
