Sauna Building Checklist: Five Things Found Too Late

In short
Five sauna details turn expensive once the walls close: the vent openings, the blocking that carries the benches, the heater circuit, the door swing, and the drying gap behind the wall. Check them before insulation goes on — a typical 6 kW heater alone needs a dedicated 30-amp 240-volt circuit.
Nothing on this list is exotic. Every item is ordinary, cheap, and takes minutes — while the wall is still open. The same items cost a weekend and a torn vapor barrier once the foil and the boards are on. Run through them the morning before insulation day, with a pencil, standing in the framed room. Are the vent openings framed, and on the right walls?
The heater and the ventilation system decide the placement, and the two common systems disagree completely. A passive gravity layout supplies low near the kiuas — the stone-topped sauna stove — and exhausts high on the opposite wall. A mechanical downdraft layout does the reverse: supply high above the stove, fan-pulled exhaust down near the floor and well away from it. Finnish building guidance sizes the flow at roughly 2 litres per second per square metre of floor, with 6 l/s as a floor value, and Saunologia notes that VTT research puts the useful range higher still.
Both layouts work. Switching between them after framing does not, because the openings land on different walls at opposite ends of the room. Settle the system first — the sauna ventilation guide lays out both recipes with heights and grille sizes — then frame the holes that system needs.
Is there blocking behind every bench?
A loaded top bench is several hundred pounds of live load in a humid room, and it has to land on framing. That means flat 2x blocking let in between the studs at each height where a bench, a backrest, or a skirt will be fastened. Paneling carries none of it.
Mark four lines, not two: top bench, lower tier, backrest, and one spare row a few inches above the top bench. Bench heights get revised after the first few sessions more often than anyone expects, and a spare row of blocking is the cheapest insurance in the build. Does the circuit match the heater you actually bought?
Size the circuit from the manual of the heater in the box, not the one on the spreadsheet from three months ago. Heater models shift during a build — a bigger room, a glass door, a backorder — and every change moves the amperage. A typical 6 kW electric heater wants a dedicated 30-amp, 240-volt circuit on #10 copper, but that number belongs to that heater.
Two details get missed alongside it. The sensor cable has to run exactly where the manual routes it, and many sensor leads must never be spliced. And residual-current protection follows a specific pattern: Finland’s electrical-safety authority Tukes requires 30 mA RCD protection on every sauna circuit except the heater’s own, and requires IP24 or better enclosures throughout. Your electrician and your inspector have the final word in your jurisdiction. Which way does the door swing, and what does it hit?
Outward, always, with no latch — a roller or magnetic catch only. Trumpkin’s Notes puts the reason plainly: anyone in the hot room must be able to leave with a simple push at any moment, because heat stress degrades coordination quickly. A latch, a hook, or a second door swinging into the same space defeats that.
So check the swing arc physically, with a tape, before the rough opening is finished. The usual collisions are a stair landing, a water heater, a changing-bench, and the other door in a two-room build. Glass panel sizes and hardware are in the doors, windows, and glass guide.
Can the wall still dry after you close it?
The hot room gets exactly one vapor barrier — the foil — and everything outside it must stay open enough to dry. Suomen Saunaseura makes the physics concrete: cool the air by a single degree and its relative humidity rises about 5%, which is how moisture condenses inside a wall that looked fine on paper. Their construction guidance calls for a ventilation gap outside the sauna’s insulation, with an air path upward into drier adjacent space.
The practical checks are short. One barrier, not two. A gap between sauna framing and any foundation concrete. Foil carried unbroken across the ceiling, every seam taped. None of it is visible once the cladding is up, which is precisely why it belongs on a pre-flight list.
What is left on the day of the first fire?
Five things, and none of them involve tools: the electrician’s sign-off in hand, one full heating cycle run empty with the room ventilated, both vents verified with the sauna airflow smoke test rather than a hopeful hand, the door swinging free, and the stones re-checked after they settle.

- When is the last moment to change the ventilation plan?
- Before the studs are framed, not before the foil goes on. Gravity and mechanical systems put their openings on different walls at opposite heights, so switching systems late means new holes in framing you have already insulated. Decide the system first, then frame the openings it needs.
- How do I know where bench blocking goes before the benches exist?
- Draw the bench section on the studs with a pencil. Put flat 2x blocking at the top-bench height, the lower-tier height, and the backrest line, then add one more row a few inches above the top bench. Benches get rebuilt more often than anyone plans for.
- Can the heater circuit be added after the sauna is finished?
- Yes, and it costs several times what it would have cost open. The cable has to reach the heater position through a wall that now carries a continuous foil vapor barrier, so the work means cutting, re-taping, and often replacing paneling. Pull the cable while the bays are empty.
